Shopify apps that remove leftover code from uninstalled apps
Short answer
Yes, there are tools for this. At least ten apps on the Shopify App Store scan your theme for code that uninstalled apps left behind. ThemeSweep, ThemeMedic and Residue can also make the change for you. ThemeSweep removes only the findings you select, on a duplicate theme with a file backup and one-click rollback. You can also do it by hand on a duplicate theme.

Which one fits
- You want the app to make the change, and an undo. ThemeSweep applies the findings you select to a duplicate theme, keeps a file backup and lets you roll back from its dashboard for 30 days. ThemeMedic (with a backup and one-click restore) and Residue (as a draft theme) also make the change.
- You only want a list and will edit the code yourself. App Bloat Clear, Upright and CleanTheme are read-only and have free scans. App Bloat Clear also offers a cleaned theme ZIP.
- You care about speed more than code. Speedscope, GhostCode and Store Health look at the whole store: scripts, Core Web Vitals and other issues, not only leftover app code.
- You have a developer. A careful manual review on a duplicate theme is still the most thorough option. Our step-by-step guide covers it.
Alternatives to ThemeSweep
If ThemeSweep is not right for you, ThemeMedic: Clean Theme Code and Residue are the closest on the Shopify App Store: both find leftover code from uninstalled apps and make the change for you, at a lower price. App Bloat Clear is the closest read-only option. Upright, CleanTheme and Theme Medic have free plans for detection. Cleanify Code's listing said it was not currently available on the Shopify App Store on 2 November 2026. None of the apps in the table can prove a piece of code is unused, because Shopify does not give apps a list of a store's other installed apps. Review every finding, whichever tool you choose.
What ThemeSweep does and does not do
- It scans supported Liquid, CSS, JavaScript and JSON theme files. Scans never change your theme.
- Each finding shows the file, the code, the likely source app and a confidence level.
- Nothing is removed until you select it. Quarantine mode comments code out instead of deleting it.
- It can miss things. A script tag that an uninstalled app left in layout/theme.liquid may not be flagged, so check that file by hand too.
- It does not promise a PageSpeed score. Measure before and after.
Common questions
Is there an app that removes leftover code from uninstalled Shopify apps?
Yes. Several Shopify App Store apps scan a theme for code that uninstalled apps left behind, including ThemeSweep, ThemeMedic, Residue, App Bloat Clear, Upright, CleanTheme, BloatBuster and GhostSweep. They differ in whether they change the theme for you. ThemeSweep removes the findings you select on a duplicate theme; ThemeMedic and Residue also make the change for you; App Bloat Clear, Upright, CleanTheme and BloatBuster leave the edit to you.
Does ThemeSweep remove leftover code automatically?
No. Scans are read-only. You review each finding and select what to remove. ThemeSweep then checks the selected code again and makes the change on a duplicate of your theme, so you can preview it before you publish. Starter and higher plans also run a scheduled scan, but a scan never changes the theme.
What are the alternatives to ThemeSweep?
On the Shopify App Store: ThemeMedic: Clean Theme Code ($7.99 a month, removes with a backup), Residue ($49 a year, makes a draft theme), App Bloat Clear (free scan, read-only, $5 a month for exact lines and a cleaned theme ZIP), Upright and CleanTheme (free, read-only), Theme Medic and GhostSweep (detection and reports), and GhostCode or Speedscope if you want a wider speed audit. Cleanify Code's listing said it was not currently available on the Shopify App Store on 2 November 2026. You can also do it by hand on a duplicate theme.
Which of these apps has the most reviews?
On 2 November 2026 most of these apps, ThemeSweep included, had no reviews on the Shopify App Store. Store Health: Audit & Scan had 8 reviews with a 5.0 rating. This is a new category, so check each listing for current reviews before you choose.
